Kerouac Style Travel Project advice- Portland Oregon through Chicago and to New York.?
For a college project, I am going to be traveling from Portland, through Chicago, and then to New York writing an oral history on hobos and drifters. I'm wondering for any advice on how to travel. I want to be relatively safe, but my first thought was "What would Jack Kerouac do?" Of course I know On the Road was written 50 years ago and hitchhiking has become a bit more dangerous, but I need to find a way to meet as many people as possible along the way. Any ideas for cheap travel besides greyhound? Or would that be my best bet? Still planning this thing out and would deeply appreciate any advice on this...also, anybody wanna go? :)

People hop trains and hitchike every day. It isnt all that dangerous, Im a chick and have hitched around just fine. You can make good money bumming change at gas stations, and most truckers will give you a lift at least to the next stop. The best places to catch rides are at on ramps to highways, gas station, truck stops, and rest areas. Make sure you have a pocket knife or some mace or a cell phone just in case, but you shouldnt have any trouble. From Chi town to NY, you'd have better luck w/ trains, as people are kind of assholes up there (especially when it comes to sharing something like a car) you can get crew changes w/ times, dates, and tracks, at any city's local libraries. Hopefully you arent doing the project to demoralize squatters, cuz the way this country is going we'll all be in the box next to them very soon.
